early days
the social heart
The history of the Mirboo North Shire Hall and Offices begins with its predecessor, the Mechanics Institute, built in 1886-1887 under the leadership of James Muirhead of the Mirboo North Progress Association.
This building, which housed a library, quickly became the heart of the town's social life. The Mechanics Institute hosted a wide variety of events, including Church services, concerts, balls, political meetings, and even farming lectures.
Its importance was solidified when the first meeting of the Shire of Woorayl was held there on 29 August 1888, and later, the inaugural meeting of the Shire of Mirboo took place on 4 July 1894.

A new hall for a growing town
As Mirboo North grew, by 1936, the local council felt that a new hall and office building were needed to replace the Mechanics Institute, marking the end of an era.
In 1937, the Mechanics Institute committee agreed to transfer all its assets, including land and the building, to the Shire Council. After the site was acquired, the building was sold and cleared. A farewell dance was held on 18 January 1938 to bid the old hall goodbye.
In its place, the former Mirboo Shire Hall and Offices were designed by AC Leith & Bartlett and constructed by H. Roberts in 1938 at 30 Ridgway.
The new building, an important example of the Classical Revival architectural style, became the focal point of the town’s civic precinct. Historically significant as the municipal headquarters for the former Mirboo Shire, it is symbolic of the town's growth during the interwar period. Aesthetically, it stands out as a superior example of public architecture from the time.
